How to read the map. Each circle represents the concentration of the surname in an Italian province. The diameter is proportional to the estimated number of resident family units. Clicking on each circle reveals historical information about the Sorio branch in that province. The oldest and most substantial concentration is in the Vicenza–Verona–Padua triangle, the area where the surname was formed from the Middle Ages. Presences in Lombardy, Lazio and Southern Italy are due to internal migrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Methodological note: the provincial figures shown are reasoned estimates based on the national total (~393 families from Cognomix) and on the qualitative distribution documented by archival sources and by the biographical entries of the known Sorios.
